The history of Irani Tea begins in Pune, India and dates back to the 1950’s. Shapur K. Irani, at the time, was part owner of the Bombay Tea Depot, a successful tea shop in Pune. After immigrating to the United States in 1954, in conjunction with the Point Four Plan of providing technical and educational assistance to the Indian farmers, Mr. Irani decided to share his love and knowledge of tea with the people of central Indiana. After testing many tea samples and several blending attempts, Mr. Irani came up with a unique blend of quality black tea. He began importing his own special blend of tea to the United States in 1958.
In 1996, Mr. Irani’s daughter, Katrina, joined him in his tea business. After four years of working side by side, learning the secrets and ins and outs of the trade, Mr. Irani made Katrina a partner in the business in 2000. Upon Mr. Irani’s retirement in 2010, Katrina took over complete operation. Katrina has begun sharing the intricacies of the family business with her daughter, Leah, thus ensuring the continuation of the family business into the third generation. They work together on a daily basis, to make sure that Irani Tea continues to offer the highest quality tea at an affordable price.
